Discuss perspective as a family and download the book cover illustration of the three mice in the road.  The car coming in the distance looks small compared to the mice.  Things up close are always going to look bigger than things at a distance. Take cell phone pictures around the house showing perspective.

Several pictures from the book show emotion in Deli’s expressions.  Download the human face template here and draw an emotion on the face.  Fear, anger, joy, laughter, love, silliness are all possibilities.  Sharing and guessing the emotion portrayed can be a fun game.   >> Full Size Face Template   |   8.5" x 11" Face Template

Make a sock puppet or a sack puppet with a brown paper bag, the fold being used for the movable mouth.  Popsicle sticks can be used to make puppet characters, as well.  Just glue the character to the stick.  Any of the characters in “Deli’s Pickle” can be drawn and colored to make a puppet.  Scenes from the book can be triggers for a spontaneous “play” or an entirely new story can be imagined.

Using ideas from “Deli’s Pickle,” design a mask or a T-shirt out of paper for yourself or someone else.
